Additional Information
Home Treatments:
Most hip pointers can be treated at home. The person should refrain from considerable physical activity for a couple of weeks. Ice should be applied on the area of injury 20 minutes at a time, 3-4 times a day for the first 7-10 days after the injury. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medication can be taken to further reduce the inflammation and pain. Taking precautions to not re aggravate the injury by properly resting the hip is important in proper conservative treatment.
Professional Medical Treatments:
Hip pointers will generally not need professional medical treatment. If the inflammation and pain does not subside via conservative treatment, a doctor may use a corticosteroid injection to reduce the inflammation. If the injury has caused a piece of bone to be chipped off from the hip bone or top of the femur, surgery may be required to rectify the situation.
Physical Therapy and Exercises:
Complete recovery of a hip pointer may require sport specific exercises, if the injury was sustained when playing a sport. Recovering the range of motion by gradually increasing the ability to flex, extend and move the affected leg side to side until no pain is felt is critical in recovery. Hip flexor, hip abduction, hip extension and wall slide stretches may also be implemented to promote full recovery.
Exercise Techniques to Prevent Injury:
While hip pointers may usually occur from a traumatic impact, maintaining good core strength will help prevent this injury from occurring. Stretches such as the standing hamstring stretch, the quad stretch, trunk rotation and double knee to chest stretch will help maintain good range of motion and strength of the hip.
